ABOUT THE MUSIC

What’s In Cherry’s Pocket (Paul)

Music inspired by Ornette Coleman's 1960s quartet with the title being a heavy nod to Don Cherry, who often played pocket trumpet with Coleman's band. A song to capture the energy and upbeat urgency felt within their playing.

Better If We Leave It (Paul)

Written during a period of self reflection after trying to rekindle a lost relationship. The realisation of finality and it being 'better if we leave it' bringing a calm acceptance to an emotional storm.

Muller’s Dilemma (McMahon)

A modulating contrafact of the standard Days of Wine and Roses. The song's title and melody is a play on Dixie’s Dilemma by Warne Marsh and serves as a dedication to Adelaide’s own James Muller.

Chorale (McMahon)

This tune is about two people who are walking the same path, but never meet. Maybe they are connected by addiction, love, or loss. They feel the same and have the same trajectory, yet are strangers to each other. Perhaps one day they will finally meet, and be able to see themselves in the other.

Fifth Avenue (Paul)

Inspired by two different Fifth Avenues on opposite sides of the world. New York’s Fifth Avenue as well as Adelaide’s own, much closer to home. Words not yet spoken, feelings not yet expressed - a loved one crossing between the two avenues.

Short Walk Home (Paul)

Composed and performed to reflect the perplexed sadness and anger felt at hearing the news and media response of yet another young female university student being raped and murdered whilst walking home at night from her public transport in Melbourne, Australia, a mere 90 meters from her apartment - five days before this session.

Penultimate Premiere (Carbo)

A paradoxical statement presented through a repeating yet ever changing call and response. The proceeding improvisation allows drummer Kyrie to lead the band through the penultimate premiere to explore and then arrive where it both began and ended.

Blues For Nicholls (Carbo)

This song was written for a good friend and trumpet player, Matthew Nicholls. It’s a tribute to his unwavering and infectious enthusiasm for music and life.

Thanks go to this wonderful band, the entire Wizard Tone team and all of the incredible people in my life that helped to make this album a reality.
